This year has been unusually warm and I spent many days reminiscing about my grill on the deck behind my house and the idle smoker. This winter I have mostly cooked indoors using some modified slow cooker recipes. It is so easy and it tastes so good. But Spring is almost here and it is time to start thinking about backyard pool parties, firing up the grill and having a backyard barbecue!

Local restaurants would like you to think they have the best barbecue or I even saw one that said they have the only “real barbecue in Richmond”, but let me tell you they are dead wrong, the barbecue guru is you! Don’t think you can’t do this stuff. It takes some patience and practice but you can have better bbq that anywhere else in Richmond, that is for sure. Restaurants offer a convenience and as well as good food (that’s a plus, not mandatory). Some are stellar, don’t get me wrong, but mainly I go for convenience and to break the routine of cooking every day and let the kids have some fun.

While I have some favorite recipes and restaurants, richmond va barbecue tries to size up the local competition fairly and also offers some great ideas on smokers grill and barbecue accessories. So check them out.

As we delve deeper into the the use of social media, twitter users and cell phone texting, an unusual phenomena seems to be unraveling. This same phenomena happened ten years ago in the midst of the high tech printing revolution where we saw the fall of many local commercial printers making way for new technology yet at the same time we began to see the antithesis to this digital revolution with the rise of the printing dinosaur, letterpress printing. Letterpress has since become the most popular printing medium for wedding invitations. This was popularized by Martha Stewart and start up letterpress companies at the time like Page Stationery. It literally blossomed into popularity at the same time we saw folks going into new digital mediums and pouncing on email.

The same is true now. As social media becomes more popular we are seeing a similar increase in popularity of traditional stationery and formal correspondence by writing letters and note cards. The same popularity that propelled letterpress printing and new digital technology has given rise to niche pockets of stationery usage like stationery for men and by fountain pen enthusiasts searching for a better medium on which to write. Not only is this ironic but these cards also are unique gifts for men and will hopefully inspire men to write more often.

For Richmond preschools and from my personal experience, I think the best one is St. Mary’s Episcopal School which is part of St. Mary’s Episcopal Church. It is in a very convenient location for those living in Goochland or Powhatan and also western Henrico and Richmond.

We have a seven year old that went from 3 day class to the 5 day class. They offer a 2 day for year class for two year old children all they way up to JK for 5 year old children. The school is in great condition, clean and well kept. I can’t say enough about how nice and friendly the teachers and administrators are and the attention for the children is fantastic. The tuition is also very reasonable. I highly recommend them.

Virginia is full of many antiquities and has much history from Jamestown to the Civil War. In addition to these many unique historical attributes, another one is the seldom known fact that former Governor Wilder used to work in Richmond as a letterpress operator in his youth.

Dave Clinger, a passionate letterpress collector and enthusiast, who donated most of his letterpress collection to the Valentine museum, noted that one of the presses in his collection was similar to one that Wilder used. It is believed that Wilder confirmed it was similar to the model he used. Interestingly enough, Richmond has grown in this respect as well as being Virginia’s most well known town for letterpress printing. Companies like Page Stationery have helped fuel the resurgence in letterpress for wedding invitations and stationery products using these older presses. Just search for letterpress Richmond or letterpress Richmond Va and you can find them quickly.

So not only was Governor Wilder Virginia’s first black Governor he was probably the first letterpress printer who served as Governor.
