This year has been unusually warm and I spent many days reminiscing about my grill on the deck behind my house and the idle smoker. This winter I have mostly cooked indoors using some modified slow cooker recipes. It is so easy and it tastes so good. But Spring is almost here and it is time to start thinking about backyard pool parties, firing up the grill and having a backyard barbecue!
Local restaurants would like you to think they have the best barbecue or I even saw one that said they have the only “real barbecue in Richmond”, but let me tell you they are dead wrong, the barbecue guru is you! Don’t think you can’t do this stuff. It takes some patience and practice but you can have better bbq that anywhere else in Richmond, that is for sure. Restaurants offer a convenience and as well as good food (that’s a plus, not mandatory). Some are stellar, don’t get me wrong, but mainly I go for convenience and to break the routine of cooking every day and let the kids have some fun.

Republican M. Keith Hodges wins the 98th Seat in the House of Delegates in the November 8, 2011 general election. The Urbanna resident decidedly defeated opponent Democrat Andy Shoukas in a clean and well planned run for the seat. The win was a result of the growing discontent and lack of trust Americans have in the Obama administration, Democrats and liberal policies that have run a muck for decades. The ire has trickled to the local level and the tide is shifting back to a solid conservative footing based on capitalistic beliefs. Hodges ran on traditional values and stayed true to the real Republican ideals that less government and regulation foster better economic times for everyone. With his pledge to create more jobs in his district that was all residents needed to hear to catapult him . . . → Read More: Hodges Scores Victorious Win in 98th District

As we delve deeper into the the use of social media, twitter users and cell phone texting, an unusual phenomena seems to be unraveling. This same phenomena happened ten years ago in the midst of the high tech printing revolution where we saw the fall of many local commercial printers making way for new technology yet at the same time we began to see the antithesis to this digital revolution with the rise of the printing dinosaur, letterpress printing. Letterpress has since become the most popular printing medium for wedding invitations. This was popularized by Martha Stewart and start up letterpress companies at the time like Page Stationery. It literally blossomed into popularity at the same time we saw folks going into new digital mediums and pouncing on email.
The same is true now. As social media becomes more popular we are seeing a similar increase in popularity of traditional stationery and formal correspondence by writing letters and note cards. The same popularity that propelled letterpress printing and new digital technology has given rise to niche pockets of stationery usage like stationery for men and by fountain pen enthusiasts searching for a better medium on which to write. Not only is this . . . → Read More: Stationery Making A Comeback

For Richmond preschools and from my personal experience, I think the best one is St. Mary’s Episcopal School which is part of St. Mary’s Episcopal Church. It is in a very convenient location for those living in Goochland or Powhatan and also western Henrico and Richmond.
We have a seven year old that went from 3 day class to the 5 day class. They offer a 2 day for year class for two year old children all they way up to JK for 5 year old children. The school is in great condition, clean and well kept. I can’t say enough about how nice and friendly the teachers and administrators are and the attention for the children is fantastic. The tuition is also very reasonable. I highly recommend them.

Virginia is full of many antiquities and has much history from Jamestown to the Civil War. In addition to these many unique historical attributes, another one is the seldom known fact that former Governor Wilder used to work in Richmond as a letterpress operator in his youth.
Dave Clinger, a passionate letterpress collector and enthusiast, who donated most of his letterpress collection to the Valentine museum, noted that one of the presses in his collection was similar to one that Wilder used. It is believed that Wilder confirmed it was similar to the model he used. Interestingly enough, Richmond has grown in this respect as well as being Virginia’s most well known town for letterpress printing. Companies like Page Stationery have helped fuel the resurgence in letterpress for wedding invitations and stationery products using these older presses. Just search for letterpress Richmond or letterpress Richmond Va and you can find them quickly.
So not only was Governor Wilder Virginia’s first black Governor he was probably the first letterpress printer who served as Governor.

Tonight Obama set a new tone for the creation of jobs. This sudden awakening and more influential tone seem to set a new precedent of what will be in store in the next 14 months. After basically admitting his failure to create the necessary jobs for a recovery, tonight he seemed to finally realize that that creation rest mostly on small business and their hiring.
He proposed payroll cuts and a tax holiday for new hires but as a small business owner I will believe it when I see it. We need a Federal payroll tax cut alright but we need a year or more of tax amnesty for employers with businesses under 50 million in sales. That would be an ideal solution to put cash back in the coffers for business owners. A $1500 tax cut for families just doesn’t cut it and a full reform and a flat tax would be appropriate. In my opinion this is too little too late unless he actually enacts the real tax reform he mentions. We’ll see what he says tomorrow in the Richmond Presidential speech on . . . → Read More: Small Business Focus of Obama Jobs Speech

She has done it again! This time Sue Corral has gone well above and beyond with her new line of stationery. Sue is the Creative Director for Page Stationery and she has created some marvelous products in her past but this year we are fortunate to have many new arrivals.
They include a new line of Holiday photo cards, which is comprised of letterpress holiday cards and a more affordable and quite spectacular line of digital holiday cards. Just take a quick look at what she has created.

Ok Richmond Va here is my basic hurricane preparation plan for hurricane Irene. It doesn’t look like Irene will go nearly as far West as Isabel did so with any luck we won’t have all the tree damage and power-line issues that we had for weeks after that hurricane.
It is advisable to have some type of plan and backup ready to go. If you have a generator make sure it is running and get all your cables and cords together for immediate use. I also recommend a chainsaw and make sure it runs and starts quickly. Have back up gas for both. I keep 4 or 5 gallons of gas for the generator and one for the saw.
I’ll never forget not having ice. So I fill my large Igloo cooler full of ice and a few beers and some gallons of water. These I can always take out if I need the space. I charge my solar lantern for a full day and make sue I have backup AA batteries and 6volt flashlight batteries. Have three or four flashlights. I get some extra bags of pretzels and chips for the kids and a bag of rice which is easy to cook . . . → Read More: Hurricane Preparation Checklist and Plan

Keith Hodges has won the primary for the 98th district House of Delegates seat tonight. Hodges was opposed by Catesby Jones, Sherwood Bowditch and Ken Gibson, all seeking the Republican nomination. Hodges had approximately 40% of vote, Bowditch 27%, Jones 16% and Gibson 15%.
Bowditch appeared to be a shoe-in with more contributions but Hodges forged a brilliant campaign and kept the heat on to win . . . → Read More: Keith Hodges Wins Primary 98th Disctrict
